Today students were presented with the question of "What does it mean to be civilized?". After a brief class discussion students walked around the room and examined several images of Native American artifacts, maps, and ruins. We then watched a music video of Disney's Pocahontas, and wrote down stereotypes from both the Native and European perspectives'. Students then created a class list of "Elements of a civilization" and another brief discussion ensued. Finally, students were asked to outline a section of the World History Text and complete a chart looking at the types of shelter, clothing and food different First Peoples would have worn in the varied regions of North America prior to Columbus. Students should have inferred that First Peoples in the America, though different than the cultures we have previously studied in the rest of the word, were definitely civilized and not a collection of backwards or primitive peoples.
